BIAB is a great idea.
Cons
Despite its potential, BIAB is an expensive product that does not live up to claims. Key features described in ads and the manuals simply do not work reliably or at all. I experienced dropouts in Rendered Audio files; Bar Settings did not work; Song Endings did not play as programed; Pushes (anticipations) Holds and Kicks did not work properly; certain combinations of Styles consistently triggered crashes.
When I contacted Support at first they said they'd never experienced or heard of any of the problems I reported. I did 3 re-installations a spent a month of sending files and trying a series of supposed 'fixes' and workarounds, none of which worked. It became apparent that Support had not actually tested the 'sure fix' solutions. Soon excuses began to be substituted for solutions. Finally they confessed that they couldn't fix the problems and told me I should accept the 'limitations' of the product. Since then there has been NO followup or news of any progress.

Summary
PG's literature exaggerates the program's actual capabilities. It is a very expensive half-baked BETA. Either the developers did not test BIAB before releasing it or they just rushed it to market without concern for obvious problems and limitations. Personally, I find it hard to believe that the developers and support team were truly unaware of them.
PG Music may be a small company but at the prices customers are paying they have a right to expect more than excuses and apologies.

Followup: I contacted PG Music to ask whether problems I reported have been fixed in BIAB 2015 for Mac: (1) Dropouts in rendered files (2)Time signature changes that do not work correctly (3) Highlighted measures going out of sync with the audio, causing songs stop playing before the end. (4)'Pushes' frequently do not play correctly and often disrupt playback in measures that follow those pushes?
PG's brief reply said, 'There have not been any changes made to the time signatures handled by Band-in-a-Box in the 2015 version.' In other words, they didn't fix them. This means claimed features are still non-functional. This suggests that the company is no more committed to maintaining ethical business practices than it is to insuring that its software works as intended before taking it to market.

PG Music programmers are obviously Windows-centric. This is easily one of the ugliest, most ridiculously laid out program on the Macintosh. The installer still ignores Apple's guidelines YEARS after PG Music's knowing this.
Wishing someone else would come along and blow these guys out of the water - they truly deserve it.

Build 22 simply refuses to install, claiming some files are missing and requiring that I reinstall the programme. How can that be if build 21 worked perfectly ? Alt., the installer tells me to 'rebuidl the desktop' !! In Mac OS X, imagine !! It would be funny if it wasn't sad :-((

At last there is a native OSX version of this old classic. And the program has now developed and get enriched so the possible variations are endless. (I have been using it since version 5, but not so much the last years since it only ran in Classic) Now however it runs perfectly in OSX and files can be saved both in the programs own format and as MIDI files.
The only thing I am missing is an easy way to change files with Garageband. Now the only solution I have found is to save the compleated song in MIDI format, then use Dent de Midi to transform it into tracks that can be imported into Garageband for further modification.
There are also a few small bugs in the list editing module I think (or I am doing something wrong) but otherwise it is a very stable program.

After I downloaded the demo on Friday the 25th of June, I got a messages 'reminding' me that it would expire on the 1st of July! Then when I took time to start it up, I found that despite their ballyhooing the new OS X version (12), the demo is an old Classic program. The 'about' box says it's version 11, but the Web page whence you download the demo says 'This demo is from version 8 of Band-in-a-Box for Macintosh.'

Not only that, but several aspects of this old V.8 or V.11 program are disabled, including notation -- one aspect I was most wanting to try.
I guess I'll just give Band-in-a-Box up as a bad job, never knowing what the actual OS X program is like.

... and has for a long time. BiaB isn't the best at what it does, but it's the only one that does it. The UI hasn't had a serious update since v.6. It doesn't really feel like an OS X program (hell, it doesn't really feel like a Mac program). Adding styles is a non-trivial task, and the style editor doesn't seem to have been updated for years. But it does seem to work, so I give it credit for that.
